Once you've signed up with WPOwl you'll need to make sure your domain name points at the right IP address, in this post, we're going to take a look at the few simple steps required to find your IP address.
The first thing you're going to need to do is log in to your WPowl control panel account at https://my.wpowl.co.uk
Once you've logged in, you'll then need to click on "Settings"
The next thing you need to do is click on the "Fetch" button, in the "SSH/FTP Access Details" section.
You'll be prompted to enter your password again, as this will also reveal your server's SSH and FTP login details.
Once you've entered your password, you'll be shown a pop-up information box which includes the username, password, IP address and port.
The IP address shown on this screen should be used for your A record for your domain name, and also for your FTP A record if required.
Have you created a new WordPress site and want to change your title or site tagline? For most new WordPress websites, the title will be set to the website name/domain name, whilst the tagline will be the default "Just another WordPress site" (did you know, up until fairly recently, the tagline was "Just another WordPress blog", paying homage to the fact WordPress was originally a blogging platform?).
Obviously this isn't ideal, you're going to want your own tagline and title which describes your site.
Luckily, changing both the title, and the tagline is quick and easy.
Firstly, you need to navigate to Settings->General:
You'll see that the first 2 options are your title and your tagline:
Simply fill out the information you want to display as your website title, and tagline, then click on the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the page.
Did you know: By default, your site title and tagline will be displayed together as the browser title on your browser tab.
In our recent post comparing posts to pages in WordPress we learned that posts by default are listed by order of post-date, with newest posts showing at the top, but what happens if you have written a post that you want to keep at the top of the list even when you've added newer posts?
The good news is, WordPress has an option to stick a post to the top of the blog page.
The process of sticking a post is quick and easy. Whether you're writing a new post, or editing an existing post, the first thing you'll need to do is click on the "Document" option on the right hand side:
Once there, you will see several options, one of which is "Stick to the top of the blog".
Simply place a checkmark in the box and then click on "Publish" at the top if it is a new post, or "Update" if you are editing an already published post.
The post should now remain at the top of your blog even when you add new posts.
WordPress comes as standard with 2 "post types" - Posts, and Pages. For new users, it's not always clear what the difference is, and where / when you should use each one.
Whilst posts and pages are very similar, in general, the "Post" should be used for blog style posts, and these will show up on your blog or news page automatically once they have been published. By default, posts are shown in chronological order, so older posts will drop down the list (unless you stick them to the top of the blog page).
As standard, if your theme supports it, blog posts will have commenting enabled - so at the bottom of each post there will be a section for your visitors to leave comments, reply to each other, and allow you to reply.
Pages are very similar to posts in terms of how you add them, and how you populate them with content, but they have some distinct differences. Firstly, with a standard WordPress setup, pages will not appear on your blog page, or your archives page, and secondly, on most themes, pages will not have a comments section on them unless you specifically go out of your way to add one.
A page should be used for anything that you would see as static content in your site's structure. Some examples would be an about us page, a static homepage, or a contact us page - the Page option is much better for this type of content than "Posts"
You also cannot set a post as your static homepage or blog page, because they aren't "pages" in the literal sense.
Posts: Should be used for any news, blog, guide, or how-to style content. They will appear on your blog and archive pages, and will as standard be arranged in chronological order
Pages: Should be used for any static content on your website, for example your homepage, an about us page, a contact page, anything which would be accessed frequently and add to your website's structure, a good (but not foolproof) way to decide is, would you put this on your main menu? If you would, it should likely be a page.
Writing blog posts in WordPress is one of the most common tasks performed on the popular Content Management System, but when you start having more than a few posts, what happens if you'd like to show some of them on one page, some on another, or even let your users browse your posts by category?
Perhaps, like us, you have a website with a bunch of tutorial posts (you're reading one now!) but also put out news posts or information about up coming events, or anything else you can think of, and would like to keep them separate.
In comes categories - a feature which is part of the WordPress core.
Today, we'll take a look at how to create categories, and also how to assign them to a post.
Firstly, from within your WordPress admin, you're going to want to go to "Posts->Categories"
This will take you to the post categories page, which will show you a list of all existing categories, but also allow you to create new categories.
As you can see, there are a few options which need to be filled out:
Once you've filled out the form with your new category info, simply click on the "Add New Category" button.
Now that we've got a category or categories set up, let's take a look at how we assign a post to a category.
It's worth noting that a post can be assigned to multiple categories at one time, or simply set to 1 category.
To assign a post to a category, either "edit" an existing post, or add a new post and then click on "Document" at the top right
Once the document section is open, simply scroll down and you should see the categories section - this will allow you to tick the category boxes you wish to assign to the post.
You'll also notice on our screenshot that there is a dropdown box "Select the primary category" - this will not show up if you only select one category, if you select multiple categories the box will automatically appear.
Once you've set the category or categories you wish to use, simply click the publish button at the top (or the update button, if you're editing an already published post).
Creating a new page in WordPress is quick and easy, and follows the same steps as creating a post in WordPress.
If you've not already logged in to your WordPress admin area, you should do so now.
Much like adding a post, we then need to click on "Pages->Add New"
As you can see there's 2 initial sections to fill out;
Once you've filled out the page title and page content, you may also like to set a featured image, although that is optional.
When you're done, simply click on the "Publish" button at the top right to put the page live, or click on the "Save Draft" link to save the page so that you can publish it at a later time.
Congratulations, you have now added a new page on your WordPress website!
Recently we covered how to write a new post in WordPress, and in this post we're going to show you how to set a featured image on your posts.
A featured image is an image that is often shown at the top of your post, and also as a thumbnail or similar on your blog/posts page, it can be anything you like, but ideally, it will be relevant to your post!
Once you've got your new (or existing) post open in your admin panel, take a look at the right hand menu. You'll need to click on "Document" just under the publish button at the top right:
Once there, scroll down and click on the "Set Featured Image" button
You'll then be asked to choose to upload an image, or choose one from your image library (images you've already uploaded)
Either select an image from your library or click on the upload files section and add a new image.
Once that has been done, click on the "Publish" button if it is a new post or page, or the "Update" button if it is an existing post or page.
Creating a post in WordPress is one of the most common tasks carried out on any WordPress website that's being used as a blog, or website which has a blog or news type page, and it's quick and easy to do. Keep reading to find out how.
First you're going to want to log in to your WordPress admin area (not sure how? Check out our guide here.)
On the left hand menu in your WordPress admin dashboard, select "Posts->Add New" and this will open up the new post screen:
As you can see, the screen is fairly self explanatory, with just a couple of fields required before you can publish your post.
The title you set should explain the post in a few words, or a short sentence - for example, this post's title is "How to create a post in WordPress". This title will show when someone visits the post, and will also be the link anchor to your post when it is displayed in your recent posts / blog page.
Now to write the post itself, you can see the "Start writing or type / to choose a block". This is where you write your post content. You can make your post as long, or as short as you like, you can also insert images and other media in your posts if you like.
Once you've written your title, and the post itself, it's time to publish your post, this will make it live on your website for people to read.
To publish your post, all you have to do is click on the large blue "Publish" button at the top right:
You'll notice you can also save the post as a draft, or preview how the post will look before you publish.
Once you've published one post, you can follow the steps again to add additional posts as and when required.
As standard, WordPress will show your latest blog posts when you visit the homepage of your website, but this can easily be changed to show a page of your choice.
Because your blog posts may not be shown on the homepage once this is done, you also have the option of selecting a new page to show your blog posts. It's quick and easy to set up, so keep on reading to find out how.
Firstly, you'll need to log in to your WordPress admin area, and then navigate to "Settings->Reading"
Once on this page, you'll see straight away that there are 2 options, "Your latest posts" and "A static page".
We are of course going to select the "A static page" option, and you'll then note that the 2 dropdown boxes become available.
The first dropdown box is where you select which page will be shown as your homepage, the page will need to exist already, or it won't show up in the dropdown box. All of your current pages will be shown, so choose which one you'd like set as your homepage.
You'll also see that there is a second dropdown called "Posts page" - this is the page that will show your latest blog posts, you can leave this blank if you wish, however, what we tend to do when setting up a new website is, create a new, blank page called "Blog" or "News" and then set that as our blog page.
Once you've chosen your static page(s), simply click on the "Save Changes" button.
If you'd like to revert back to default, simply change the "Your homepage displays" option back to "Your latest posts" and again, click on the "Save Changes" button.
As standard, the default user role in WordPress is Subscriber, and that is the most secure setting to use, however, sometimes having the default user role set as something else such as Editor or Contributor.
Once you know what role you want to set as default, or would like to check what your WordPress user default role is currently set to, keep reading.
First, you're going to need to log in to your WordPress admin area, and then click on "Settings" on the left-hand admin menu. This should take you to the site's general settings.
Around half way down the page, you should see New User Default Role.
As you can see from our screenshot, it is set to Subscriber. You can choose any of the available roles, and then click on the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the page.
Note: Please use extreme caution when changing this setting. Giving a default role with too many permissions could cause you issues with your website, or even allow people to hijack it! Do not set the default role to Administrator!!
